Two drums (top and middle) and a tobacco pipe (bottom). The home-grown tobacco was stuffed into the top of the smaller pipe and set alight. The tobacco smoke was then sucked down into the larger pipe and inhaled. Many of the items that the Isabella sailors traded in the strait had actually come from the coast of Papua New Guinea. The islanders were part of a trading network that had probably existed for thousands of years. They also traded with the natives of mainland Australia and occasionally with Indonesian trading praus.
